Tucked into a quiet corner of Plymouth, this courtyard project transformed an outdoor space into a true retreat. What began as a straightforward walkway replacement grew into a full redesign, blending durable hardscape construction with a thoughtfully curated planting palette. The heart of this project was a complete hardscape overhaul. The existing walkway was removed to make way for a new paver patio and walkway system using Cambridge smooth-finish pavers in a platinum tone, a clean, contemporary choice that complements the surrounding architecture. Recycled gravel and blue stone were incorporated as base and edging materials, while polymeric sand was used between the joints to lock pavers in place and discourage weed growth. The result is a surface built for both beauty and longevity, ready to handle years of gatherings, morning coffee, and everyday life outdoors.
Bordering the new patio, our design team selected a mix of plantings chosen specifically for year-round visual interest. Layered textures and colors, from the soft, arching blades of Hakonechloa grass to the rich evergreen structure of Chamaecyparis and Skimmia, create a border that changes with the seasons while anchoring the space. A weeping Japanese maple serves as a graceful focal point, and compact hollies and Weigela add both structure and seasonal color. Fresh mulch was worked into the beds to give the plantings a clean, finished look while helping retain moisture and suppress weeds.
One detail that speaks to the homeowner’s care for their new landscape: a discreet fence lined with chicken wire, installed around the planting beds to keep bunnies from disturbing new growth. It’s a simple, practical touch, but an important one. New plantings are especially vulnerable in their first seasons, and this small addition helps ensure the investment in the courtyard’s design continues to thrive for years to come.
To support the new plantings as they establish themselves, an irrigation system was installed throughout the courtyard. Consistent, well-managed watering is one of the most important factors in helping new plants take root and flourish, and this system takes the guesswork out of that process.
